How AI Agents Are Changing Documentation Analytics

Most documentation sites’ traffic came from a human audience via a web browser. In this GenAI world, most of the web traffic is generated by AI agents. Many popular documentation sites report that AI agents’ traffic has surpassed human-generated traffic. The implication of this change is that technical writers are still relying on outdated documentation analytics such as time-on-page, bounce rate, views, and search traffic data that is built for human traffic, while prominent current traffic comes from AI agents.

AI agents access documentation content via a few API calls, making traditional engagement metrics such as session depth, time-on-page, and click paths (to understand user journey) unreliable signals to assess content effectiveness. For example, an AI agent would fetch the entire API reference in one request, and it would be captured as a “bounce” in your analytics. This is not failure. However, that is how the analytics system is designed to work. Also, search engine referrals assume that your customer typed in a query, clicked on your documentation page, and then read the page content. AI agents do not discover your content that way. This shows that measuring organic traffic as a proxy for documentation site health is no longer valid.

How AI Agents Access Your Docs

Many knowledge base vendors are adding features to ensure documentation content is discoverable by both humans and AI agents. AI agents can request page content and receive it in plain markdown format, making it more token-efficient. This approach is very different from serving HTML content to AI agents, where AI agents have to take extra effort to extract content from HTML pages.

Many documentation sites expose AI-native endpoints such as /llms.txt, /llms-full.txt, and /*.md. They also capture server logs when an AI agent reads or accesses this endpoint during their workflow. Also, MCP tool calls are purpose-built for AI agents and represent the clearest signal that AI agents are actively working with your documentation content.

Humans read linearly, and it is easy to track their user journey via Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity. However, AI agents do not read content linearly. They fetch the whole content in one go. Thus, self-contained sections are becoming a functional requirement of documentation pages.

How AI Agent Traffic Is Captured and Measured

Many AI coding agents use web fetch or web search tools to discover your content. The first entry point is through the llms.txt file. Once these tools hit your documentation infrastructure, server logs can be captured. This agent traffic can be logged and can be used as the best metric to track traffic volume. AI agents sometimes have inherent memories about your documentation sitemap. This happens because of the documentation site content present in the training dataset during LLM training. When an AI agent accesses your llms.txt or sitemap.xml, details such as user agent, header information, page URL, and so on can be captured for documentation analytics. It is also important to track LLM crawler traffic along with AI agent traffic.

Tracking AI Agent Retrieval Failures and Redirects

It is important to track pages that are read by AI agents and their status code. For example, sometimes documentation page URLs are moved, and redirection rules are set. If an AI agent hits that particular URL, it is important to know whether the redirected URL has sent 200 OK to ensure that the right content is served. Sometimes, the request page content might have been removed with no redirect rule in place. Capturing all 200 OK, 301 redirects, and 404 errors from AI agents is vital for technical writers to ensure the documentation page is accessible and readable.

AI agents process documentation differently from human readers. Instead of scanning pages visually, AI systems rely on structured content, semantic hierarchy, and machine-readable formatting to retrieve and interpret information accurately.

Documentation designed for AI readability improves retrieval quality and reduces hallucination risk. Self-contained sections with clear headings allow AI systems to extract meaningful context without relying heavily on surrounding content.

Structured markdown formatting, concise explanations, consistent terminology, and well-organized API examples improve how AI systems interpret technical information. Removing unnecessary navigation clutter and minimizing ambiguous references also helps AI agents retrieve cleaner context windows.

What Technical Writers Should Do About Analytics Now

Setting up llms.txt, a good sitemap, along with the right server logs, is essential to capture vital metrics necessary for the new analytics framework. Documentation quality is measured as soon as the AI agent uses the content to accomplish tasks, rather than a human reading it. The new analytics metrics framework is evolving, and technical writers need to understand new metrics. More importantly, they need to know how to derive insights and act on them to improve documentation quality.
